The Rabbi of Odessa was reproaching his chazzan. “You should be ashamed of yourself — a cantor, of all people!”
“Why, what did I do?” protested the surprised chazzan.
“Not you, your children. The way they run after the town lunatic and torment him is perfectly disgraceful. I want it stopped at once.”
“But they don’t tease him because of his mental condition,” protested the cantor. “It is only because he is also the garbage collector and smells so horrible. I assure you, Rabbi, that if you were the village idiot you would be gratified with the respect my children would have for you.”
